Colombia, ELN guerrillas launch peace process

Colombian former senator and mediator in the humanitarian exchange of hostages, Piedad Cordoba, speaks with the press in Bogota, on June 10, 2014Colombia’s government and the country’s second largest guerrilla group, the National Liberation Army, announced Tuesday they have opened peace talks, with presidential elections just days away. The government already is in the midst of peace talks with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, FARC, Colombia’s largest rebel group, which were begun in November 2012. So far, the government and the National Liberation Army, or ELN, have agreed to hold talks about the victims of the conflict and the rebel group’s “participation in society.” The surprise announcement comes as President Juan Manuel Santos, who is seeking a second term, finds himself in a close run-off election on Sunday.
