Data Visualizations: Mass Shootings in the United States

A heavily armed man and woman wearing tactical gear and ski mask opened fire on a holiday banquet at the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino, California, killing 14 people and seriously wounding 17 others. Hours later, they died in a shootout during a police pursuit. Another person, a male, who was seen leaving the area was taken into custody. San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan identified one dead suspect as Syed Rizwan Farook, 28, the other as Tashfeen Malik, 27, his wife or fiancee. Burguan said Farook was born in the United States; the chief said he did not know Malik’s background. A suspicious device left at the center is “believed to be an explosive device,” he said. President Obama called for stricter gun control in the wake of the shootings. It is believed to be the deadliest mass shooting in the United States since Sandy Hook. This incident comes less than a week after the Nov 28th Planned Parenthood attack in Colorado Spring.
