Jean-Bertrand Ewanga, general secretary of the Union for the Congolese Nation (UNC) party, was arrested on Tuesday, accused of “insulting the head of state and inciting tribal hatred”, according to his lawyers. “He spent the night in the prison at Makala in violation of the order of the Supreme Court,” his lawyer, Jean-Baudouin Mayo, told AFP, accusing the prosecutor’s office of responsibility for the “arbitrary” detention. Is Makala a place for house arrest?” asked one of the lawmaker’s daughters on condition she not be identified.
