Palestinians look at smoke billowing from a nearby building hit by an Israeli air strike in Gaza City on July 13, 2014Around 100 Egyptians held a protest in central Cairo on Sunday against Israel’s deadly offensive in the Gaza Strip and criticised their government’s efforts to halt the violence. Demonstrators walked behind a large banner that read, “End the illegal blockade of Gaza,” and chanted: “Down with normalisation!” Protesters criticised the Egyptian government’s hands-off approach towards the latest conflict in the Palestinian enclave that has killed more than 160 Gazans since last Tuesday. Egypt, which has a 1979 peace treaty with Israel, played a key role in mediating ceasefires in past wars between the Jewish state and Hamas, the Islamist movement which controls Gaza.
