France's trade deficit widens amid fears of stalling growth

The port of Le Havre, northwestern France, on July 4, 2014France’s trade deficit widened in June, bringing the first-half total to nearly 30 billion euros and adding to concerns about stalling growth in the eurozone’s second-largest economy. The difference between imports and exports widened in June to 5.4 billion euros ($7.2 billion) from 5.1 billion euros in May, customs data showed on Thursday. For France that is nothing new: the country has posted a trade deficit every month for the past decade, and the last time it posted a full-year surplus was in 2002. Frederik Ducrozet at Credit Agricole said the trade gap was smaller because imports were falling, rather than because exports were rising, “which suggests that domestic demand is weakening”.
