Hollande fears handful could block climate summit

French President Francois Hollande called on all countries to back a UN climate deal at talks opening in Paris on Monday, but said he feared “a few” nations could derail the process. Speaking at the Commonwealth summit in Malta, where leaders from the 53-country organisation were seeking common ground on the issue, Hollande said it was mankind’s duty to reach an “ambitious” accord so that global warming was tamed. The negotiations are taking place under the banner of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), a 195-nation forum where decisions are adopted by consensus.
