McConnell: Republican armtwister seizes Senate brass ring

Senator Mitch McConnell arrives for work on Capitol Hill on November 12, 2014 in Washington, DCIncoming US Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is ascending to the job he has sought for decades, marshalling Republicans with tenacity and skill to block President Barack Obama. Last week voters in his impoverished state re-elected the 72-year-old McConnell to a sixth six-year term. On Thursday party colleagues unanimously entrusted him to lead the Senate from January at least through the final two years of Obama’s turbulent presidency. “Senator McConnell is the most experienced man for the job and one of the sharpest minds in the US Senate,” the chamber’s number two Republican, John Cornyn, told AFP.
