The arrests, which took place earlier this week, came after a nearly one-month long surveillance operation, Hassoumi Massaoudou told a press conference in Niamey. The alleged coup was scheduled for December 18, when President Mahamadou Issoufou was set to return to the capital after attending independence day celebrations elsewhere in the country, the minister said.
