Spanish govt challenges Catalan secession motion in court

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy speaks during a press conference at the Moncloa Palace in Madrid, on November 11, 2015Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said Wednesday his government had launched a Constitutional Court challenge to a resolution passed by Catalonia’s parliament on splitting from the rest of the country. Lawyers for the state have asked the court to “immediately suspend this resolution and all of its effects,” Rajoy told a news conference following an emergency cabinet meeting. Separatist Catalan lawmakers approved a text on Monday which calls on the regional assembly to start working on legislation within 30 days to create a separate social security system and treasury, with a view to completing independence in 18 months.
