Thousands attend Polish 'pro-democracy' demonstrations

Protesters shout slogans during an anti government demonstration in Warsaw on December 19, 2015Thousands of people demonstrated in Poland’s capital Warsaw and other cities Saturday, accusing the conservative government that took power just last month of undermining democracy. “We are going to defend democracy, we are going to defend the constitution,” a crowd of around 10,000 demonstrators that gathered outside parliament in Warsaw, which is now controlled by the Law and Justice party (PiS), shouted. The PiS, led by staunch conservative ex-premier Jaroslaw Kaczynski, has already plunged the country into a political crisis over its controversial nominations to the Constitutional Court.
