Republican U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump leaves the stage after speaking at a town hall event in AppletonBy Steve Holland WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump took a detour off the campaign trail on Thursday, visiting Washington for talks with his foreign policy team after a series of national security statements that have drawn criticism. The meeting was hosted by his top backer in the capital, U.S. Senator Jeff Sessions of Alabama, who chairs Trump’s foreign policy team. Trump was last in Washington on March 21 for talks with Republican lawmakers in a meeting that also was hosted by Sessions.
