US concerned at charges against ex-Georgia leader

Former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili delivers a speech on Independence Square in Kiev on December 7, 2013Washington Tuesday voiced concerns about the filing of criminal charges against former Georgian president Mikheil Saakashvili. “Commitment to the rule of law means both that everyone must comply with the law in a democratic society and that the legal system should not be used as a tool of political retribution,” State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said. Georgian prosecutors announced Monday they had charged Saakashvili and several of his top lieutenants with abuse of power over the breaking up of anti-governmental demonstrations in 2007.
