US condemns 'vicious' Nigeria bombings

Rescuers and residents gather at the charred scene following a bomb blast at Terminus market in the central city of Jos on May 20, 2014The United States on Wednesday condemned the “vicious” bombing of Nigeria’s central city of Jos, as well as a series of “terrorist acts” on defenseless civilians. The US denounced Tuesday’s twin bombings in Jos, which left at least 118 dead, as well as a suicide car bombing in northern Kano in which four people were killed. “These vicious attacks on defenseless Nigerian civilians and Boko Haram’s abduction last month of more than 200 girls in Chibok are unconscionable, terrorist acts demanding accountability and justice,” State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said. “We continue to stand with the Nigerian government and people in their efforts to defeat violent extremism in a manner that protects civilians and ensures respect for human rights.”
