US, Cuba join to fight Ebola in West Africa

Cuba on Wednesday convened a regional meeting attended by the United States on the fight against Ebola — a rare sign of cooperation between the longtime foes. The two-day technical-level conference was also attended by representatives from Canada, more than 30 Latin American and Caribbean countries and regional health organizations to forge a coordinated response to the deadly epidemic in West Africa. “The main purpose of this meeting is to exchange views for the fight against Ebola,” said Cuba’s Health Minister Roberto Morales at the start of the conference. He said the fight to contain the virus, which has killed nearly 5,000 people mostly in Liberia, Sierra leone and Guinea, requires urgent support.
