A White House official said Saturday that President Barack Obama was briefed on the devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake believed to have killed more than 1,200 people in Nepal and dozens more in neighboring China and India. US Secretary of State John Kerry said the United States was working closely with the government of Nepal to provide assistance and support. “To the people in Nepal and the region affected by this tragedy we send our heartfelt sympathies,” he said.
